Ramen

Bowls are the most basic thrown form. In this series I am trying to explore this simple form, and refine to something which feels correct under the hands, joyful, and functional. Ramen bowls are a good form for experimentation, given their size, the variation in width and depth, and the fact they obviously need to work.

I aim for balance between the rim and the volume it describes, and between the curve of the form and the foot that supports it. This means a lot of experimenting, refining, and failure. These are all meant to be used, so the inside presents a plain, perfect curve to not detract from the food. The outside—the part which is touched and held—is marked, sometimes meandering, sometimes slashed. This is the second thing that interests me: tactility. Given I only mark the outside of bowls, this essentially acts as something secret, which can only be known and experienced by holding, and using the bowl.
