Rice

Bowls are the most basic thrown form. In this series I am trying to explore this simple form, and refine to something which feels correct under the hands, joyful, and functional.

Rice bowls are used as part of a selection of bowls that will make up a meal. Given their small size, they are a nice form for experimentation in form and decoration, and are small enough to limit the size of any disasters (bloating, cracking). Many of these bowls are deliberately overfired, taking the clay up to its limits to produce a dark-red burned body. I will tend to glaze the inside with (white) tin, to enhance the shine of the glutinous rice. The small size of these bowls acts as a reminder that I should try to limit my rice consumption.
